Who are the Primitive Baptists?

The Primitive Baptists are a highly conservative, carefully Bible-bound people.  We claim no authority, and have no interest, in any doctrine, or any practice not specifically authorized in the Bible.

Rev. 22:18  If any man shall add unto these things God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.

That has left us without the elaborate machinery usually associated with religion.  That is perfectly alright with us.  We feel that the many projects and campaigns so common in religion, rather than enhancing, are highly distracting from true worship.  It is our desire to keep our attention focused on Christ, and to spend our time worshiping him.  Our manner is very simple, and hopefully, very Christ exalting.

2 Cor. 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

We have no desire to second-guess God.  We cannot imagine we could come up with any God-honoring endeavor he failed to think of, or that we might originate any beneficial program he did not provide.  We believe the Lord set up the church just the way he wanted it, it is not necessary for us to try to improve on his work.  For that matter, we are fearful of bringing in any new thing, any strange fire, into the Lord's service.

Lev. 10:1,2    And the sons of Aaron took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not.  And there went out strange fire from before the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.

We believe the Lord's church has stood ever since he established it.  He promised to establish it, to preserve it, and not to allow the very gates of hell to prevail against it.  He promised that God would continue to be honored in the church throughout all ages.  The Church could not very well be honored in the church throughout all ages, if it did not continue to exist throughout all ages.

Dan. 2:44     And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

Matt. 16:18    And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I

will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Eph. 3:21   Unto him be glory in the church by Christ throughout all ages, world

without end, Amen.

The church has never achieved perfection, not even in the time of Christ and the

apostles.  That is why Paul wrote all those epistles; he was correcting them for

their errors.  But in every age there has been a relatively pure church,

endeavoring to abide strictly by the instructions of the Bible, and worship God in

simple faithful adoration.  They have been called by a variety of names at various

times, and in different countries.  They have been called Donatists, Novationists,

Albigenses, Waldenses, Anabaptists. etc.  They did not choose the names by

which they were called.  The names were usually given them by their enemies,

and often identified them by where they were located, or who their leaders were.

The Primitive Baptists claim those simple, faithful people as our spiritual

ancestors.  This explanation has been painfully brief, but it is our purpose to give

some idea of who we are and what we believe.  It is the purpose of this website

to provide literature for anyone who wishes to explore those claims.
